Mac Van Wielingen

Mac Van Wielingen provides leadership support for ARC Financial with a focus on strategy, corporate development and investment decision-making.  Mac was a founder of ARC Financial in 1989 and ARC Resources Ltd. in 1996. 

ARC Financial is a leading private equity investment management company focused on the oil and gas sector in Canada with currently approximately $5 billion of capital under management.

Mac is also a founder, director and former Chair of ARC Resources Ltd., one of Canada’s largest conventional oil and gas companies with current daily production of approximately 110,000 barrels of oil equivalent and total market capitalization of approximately $8 billion. 

Mac is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Alberta Investment Management Corporation, a provincial crown corporation responsible for managing approximately $90 billion on behalf of public sector pension, endowment and special purpose funds.   

Mac is a past and current director of numerous other companies within the oil and gas sector, and is active in various capacities in the community and the not-for-profit sector.   

Mac is also President of Viewpoint Capital Corporation, a private family-owned investment company, and President of Viewpoint Foundation, a private charitable foundation. 

As a co-founder and Chair of the Canadian Centre for Advanced Leadership in Business (CCAL), Mac is actively involved at the University of Calgary.  CCAL's mission is to support the introduction of advanced understandings of business leadership into business education, with a focus on performance and ethics.

Mac has a passionate interest in leadership, organizational culture and communication which has grown from 30 years of successful entrepreneurship and corporate executive leadership. These interests drive his involvement in writing and speaking on related themes.

In 2015, Mac received the C-Suite Executive Leadership Award for Chairman of the Year, ARC Resources Ltd. from Alberta Oil.  In June 2014, he became an Adjunct Professor at Haskayne School of Business and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Calgary.  Also in 2014, Mac received the Distinguished Business Leadership Award from the Haskayne School of Business, and the Calgary Chamber of Commerce.  In 2013, Mac was the recipient of the Calgary Ivey Leadership Award, and in 2011 he won the Prairies Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year award.

Mac is an honours graduate of the Ivey School of Business in finance and has also studied post graduate economics at Harvard University.


Cal Wenzel

Cal Wenzel founded Shane Homes Ltd. in 1979 and has stewarded its growth into a multi-million dollar company which employs over 120 full time staff and countless contracted tradespeople and suppliers. Nearly forty years later, he remains steadfastly commitment to maintaining the best reputation for building quality homes, to continuously improve, and to satisfy his customers.

Prior to founding Shane Homes, Cal held a senior management position with the Jim Pattison Group of Companies. Over the years he was a founding partner and President of Excel Homes Ltd., a company that specialized in the first-time home buyer market. He was also founding partner and Vice-Chair of Apex Land Corporation, a land development company involved in multi-family and institutional developments.  

He has served as President of the Calgary Region Home Builder's Association, President of the Alberta Home Builder's Association, Executive Vice-President of the Canadian Home Builder's Association, Director of the New Home Warranty Program of Alberta, and is a member of the Alberta Home Builder's Association "Hall of Fame". Outside of the industry, Cal has served on numerous boards, committees and charitable foundations.  

Cal, along with his wife Edith, and Shane Homes, have made giving back to the community they serve a priority. In the first profitable year of Shane Homes, they donated 25% of their proceeds to Ronald McDonald House. Their philanthropy has continued for over 30 years and has added up to tens of millions of dollars. Cal plays a key role in the annual Willow Park Charity Classic which raises in excess of $500,000 annually for a variety of charities.  A longtime supporter of the Kinsmen Children's Hospital Home Lotto, Cal also served on the Ronald McDonald House fund development board.  

While Cal chooses a wide variety of organizations to support, he has placed a particular focus on supporting organizations that benefit children and families; be it through health research, support of the Arts, donating to educational institutions or providing educational grants to families who are less fortunate than his own. In addition to targeting ways to provide others with opportunities to experience or have access to some basic fundamentals of life, he also has a strong desire to assist them in moving toward achieving a better life for their families. Cal believes in being a team player in business, philanthropy, and life.  On various occasions he has joined fellow home builders to make transformational gifts to institutions like SAIT and the RESOLVE Campaign to end homelessness in Calgary.

 


Ronald D. Southern

He lived an extraordinary life, building and accomplishing what very few can dream of.

Ronald D. Southern lived in Calgary all of his life but traveled the world extensively during his adult years. He was a proud Canadian and loved his Alberta roots.

While still in high school in 1947, Ronald, a self-described “child of commerce”, founded Alberta Trailer Hire with his father Samuel Donald. Starting with five people, the enterprise today –  ATCO Group – has grown to more than 8000 employees worldwide.  

Ronald was a self-made businessman who became a respected giant of Canadian commerce. His success included gas and electrical utility companies, midstream, drilling, pipelines, logistics, manufacturing, workforce housing sales, leasing, maintenance and operations.  

ATCO Ltd. and Canadian Utilities Limited, which ATCO acquired and repatriated in 1980, have done business in more than 100 countries around the world. 

In addition to acting as Chairman of the Board of ATCO, Canadian Utilities and Akita Drilling for decades,  Ronald actively enjoyed his time on the Boards of Directors of a number of Canada’s most prestigious companies including: Canadian Pacific Limited, Chrysler Canada, Imasco,  Lafarge Canada, Royal and Sun Alliance (RSA), Trimac, Pacific Western Airlines, Canadian Pacific Airlines, Canadian Airlines,  Xerox Canada, Mercantile  Bank, Canadian Export Development Corporation, Crown Zellerbach, and Fletcher Challenge.

In 2007 he was inducted into the Canadian Manufacturing Hall of Fame. In 1996 Ronald was recognized by the Financial Post as the CEO of the Year in Canada. In 1990 the University of Manitoba recognized him as the International Distinguished Entrepreneur and in 1986 the University of Alberta recognized Ron as the Businessman of the Year.      

RD, as Ronald was known by all his friends, was awarded a Companion of the Order of Canada in 2007 and honoured with the Alberta Order of Excellence in 2012.


Biography

John Deilwart Small

John Dielwart is Founder, Director, and the former Chief Executive Officer of ARC Resources Ltd. which owns and operates oil and gas properties in Western Canada.  He oversaw the growth of ARC Resources Ltd. from start-up in 1996 to a total capitalization of approximately $10 billion.

After his retirement from ARC Resources Ltd. on January 1, 2013, Mr. Dielwart re-joined ARC Financial Corp. as Vice-Chairman.  ARC Financial Corp. is Canada’s leading energy focused private equity manager with over $4.0 billion of capital under management. Mr. Dielwart provides leadership support for the executive team in the areas of internal governance and investment decision-making. With his extensive background in creating, building and leading one of Canada’s most successful oil and gas companies, mentorship of ARC Financial employees as well as management of ARC’s investee companies is a primary responsibility.  He is a member of ARC’s Investment and Strategy committees.

Prior to joining ARC Financial in 1994, Mr. Dielwart spent 12 years with a major Calgary based oil and natural gas engineering consulting firm, as senior vice-president and a director, where he gained extensive technical knowledge of oil and natural gas properties in western Canada. Mr. Dielwart also spent the first five years of his career with a multinational oil and gas company. 

Mr. Dielwart has a Bachelor of Science with Distinction (Civil Engineering) degree from the University of Calgary (1977). He served two three year terms as a Governor of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) including 18 months (2002 to 2004) as Chairman. He is also a founding board member and current Board Co-Chair of the Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre.
